Review of Strong Heart
Strong heart is a story about a family recently reunited with their granddaughter, Sarah, whom they never knew about. This takes place as their taking a camping road trip on which they hesitantly took her along. A lot of challenges were experienced, in which they thought Sarah was expected to give them a hard time, or may not have even survived. On the contrary, they noticed Sarah as being nothing short of bravery and boldness. It could be said that she had a strong heart, hence the book title.
This book was written by Mr Charlie Sheldon published in 2017. The plot of Strong Heart goes back and forth quite often, reflecting a lot on the characters’ past activities and experiences in the same in the same setting, just with a change of characters here and there. Though seemingly repetitive, it could well explain why these characters had the vast experience that they had in the setting. The Bob-bob experience adds a fold of repetition to which may make one wonder what lesson was learned in that. This was what I did not like about the book.
Sheldon made the characters in Strong Heart interesting gradually introduced them mysteriously as people we were to know differently with the passing of time. For instance, Sarah at first, seemed to be a type of character who would not find the journey but surprisingly, her experience taught her so much that the people with her also learnt from her a thing or two from her strong heart. This really revealed similarities between hers and Myra’s personalities of boldness and sternness, which seemed interesting as they were not biologically related. The characters Sarah narrated about during her missing era are were just too many and quite confusing with similar names and not all of them had much of an impact in the storyline. That, I also did not appreciate. Other than that, I absolutely loved the characters of this story
Furthermore, the setting was interesting as it was an exposure to life out of the ordinary, everyday setup and exposed the mysterious life of the edgy camping life, where safety, food, and shelter are not as easily accessed as in the home setup. It was also interesting because it revealed a lot about the history of the Native Americans as well as how they survive/d in such circumstances.
The book contained profanity as well as religious content. The book was written well with the interesting, supposedly typical Native American English in the direct speech of the characters. The grammatical errors were also reasonably. However, the repetition of quotation marks related errors creates a concern in the editing.
I give the Strong hearts a three out of four rating because of the interesting characters and how it explores the setting to a point that stimulates interest in the actual historical and ecological content of Native Americans. This, as well as the relationship between the characters, except for those many extras who appeared when Sarah was missing.
Recommendations are that the number of extra characters should be more limited in future in order for them not to be so confusing and minimally impactful. Furthermore, the editing of the book does have room for improvement.
