Review of Gilded Prisons
[Following is a volunteer review of "Gilded Prisons" by Linda Gould.]
This novel, Gilded Prisons by Linda Gould, is about a 32-year-old famous baseball player, Justin Moore, who plays right field for the Washington Filibusters. He is kidnapped at gun point one day on an off-season practice with his friends and fellow teammates. The story follows his family, and his kidnapper's lives throughout the next couple of years. Politics and struggles behind being not only a baseball player but also a baseball wife are a big part of this story. With many different obstacles and challenges to overcome, the reader is constantly wondering what will happen next and how his family will survive his sudden kidnapping and everything that follows.
This novel was not what I was expecting by a long shot. From the cover I assumed this would be a romance, but it was so much more than that. While this is not my normal read, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. It covered politics, sports, family, and so much more. While the cover is what drew me in, the story and suspense are what kept me there. Another thing I loved about this book was that it is by a female author and has a male protagonist. You do not see that too often and it was refreshing.
There were only a few things I didn't enjoy about this book. In my opinion it was too slow at times, and it sometimes felt unrealistic. For example, I thought some things in the novel were forgiven too fast to be realistic. I also felt like there was some information that could have been left out and wasn't crucial to the story that made it drag along. I also didn't like how they censored out curse words. I've never seen that before and thought it took away the impact that the author was trying to make.
Overall, this was a good book. I rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars because it was a little slow and at times seemed like it was missing something. While the book overall was good, I struggled to keep reading sometimes because it didn't keep my attention. I am very glad I pushed through and finished it, because the ending and overall story was worth it.
I also wished they would have touched more on some topics that were introduced. I feel like this book was made for adults and that it was strange they censored out curse words.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance books with a strong plot. While there are not that many graphic scenes, I would recommend waiting until at least 16 to read. This is also a great read for readers who love suspense and reading about politics and the ways that it impacts the world.
