Review of The Reel Sisters
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a fascinating novel with loads of thrilling adventures. It absorbs you right into the imagery of the plot leaving you to dream and imagine it. The author's descriptive writing style better explains the saying, "show not tell."
Rose, a witty elderly lady who knows how best to interact with each of the ladies in her fly fishing (as used in the book) group, was indeed a jolly lady. The other ladies admire her a lot. She has a wealth of knowledge both at fly fishing and life matters as she has lived through decades of life experiences. Rose was dazed by the voice and image she saw asking for help on a cool fly fishing day. That encounter dug up old grief that she kept within her for so long. Amanda tried to give her a shoulder to lean on, but she rejected it. Will Rose open up to the ladies, or will she keep her secret forever?
The story is about a group of women who go fly fishing. It portrays the harmony between fly fishing and their life experiences. Rose and her husband, Bob, have a cabin up in the mountain, sitting right on the Arkansas River in Colorado. A group of fly fisherwomen, including Rose, camp in the cabin while on a weekend or planned getaway. The women go hiking on the mountain, fly fishing in the river, share stories to encourage one another, and take hot meals amidst loads of fun. This getaway helps them unwind and strategize on how to meet their goals.
The story is doused in suspense as it unfolds with a good pace in a very imagery pattern, so descriptive to the core. I liked the story because it is filled with many outdoor adventures and humor. It has the presence of the ancient symbol of the Inuit culture, which adds to exquisite imagery. My favorite character is Rose. She shows wisdom and strength. Also, she is a born leader, good teacher, and keeper.
The author emphasizes the need to focus on goals, live life up to expectations, and get out of one’s comfort zone to explore and find purpose. However, I noticed many errors while reading, but I appreciate the level of editing done in the book. There is nothing I dislike in the book.
I rate this book three out of four stars because of the number of errors I observed in it. I recommend this to people who love adventure, thriller and appreciate art in any form. I believe people who love nature and struggle to chart their course in destiny or going through life's rough experiences will also love the book.
