The novel Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a magical and historical book. It all begins when Sarah is unexpectedly dropped off at Tom's door step by Ruth her grandmother. She had become tired of living with Sarah because she was a troublesome girl with a bad attitude. After much persuasion , Tom embarks on a trip into Washington State Olympic wilderness with his two friends Myra and William and his granddaughter Sarah. His main objective being to return an ancient artifact he had found lying next to his father's dead body in the wilderness. Unknown to them the artifact brings hope of saving the wilderness from mining.

The trip becomes more interesting when Sarah disappears for 8 days . After her disappearance she tells an unbelievable and fascinating experience which involves coming face to face with an extinct bear , being a captive to a native community and learning various skills which are fundamental to the survival in the wilderness. It appears that this young girl leads them along this magical experience.

What I like about the novel is that Charlie Sheldon has incorporated Sarah ,a young generation into the picture to learn from the experience. The author is keen on the importance of passing on legends to the next generation to ensure that history is preserved. I also like the fact that the novel is unique to this present age because few authors write about the deep history of the native people .Moreover he has incorporated suspense at the end of the novel because of the turn of events. I was definitely eager to know what transpired next.

What I don’t like about the book is that the extensive dialogues between the main characters takes away the richness of the novel. It feels very monotonous to read at various instances. I also don’t like the fact that the experience of Myra , Tom and William is not extensively written in the book .It instead dwells on Sarah a 13 year old girl whom no-one believes.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars because the novel opens the readers mind to historical events and discoveries. The author has done a great job as there are no grammatical errors .It has also brought to the attention the challenge of good historical preservation which has brought about a lot of gaps in finding the origin of various historical events.

I would recommend this book to readers interested in history and fantasy.
