Review of Strong Heart
The story starts when Tom Olsen, along with Myra and her father William, will hike in the backcountry of Washington's Olympic National Park, where he plans to leave a Native American artifact along with his father's grave. But a surprise knocked on the door, Tom's ex-wife shows up with a thirteen-year-old girl who is known to be his granddaughter, which Tom never knew he had. Sarah's character is like one of those emo-type teenage kids, a tad stubborn and more like a problem child. It's reasonable cause her parents died, and he only got her remaining family to take care of her. Despite her stubbornness, she is a curious child and has a talent for sketching. Because of this news, Tom decides to take Sarah on their hike. And that's how the story revolves...
I like how this book tackles history, racism, archeology, ancient people, nature, modern tribes, and mystery. The author included different kinds of myths and legends in the story, which made the plot a lot more interesting. I like mysteries and puzzling plots. Like how Tom buried his father in a remote area in the forest, the bear which Sarah saw, the Native Artifact (which is known to be an atlatl), the giant animals that went extinct, the message in which Tom's father wanted to tell him and Sarah's disappearance. When Sarah disappeared, the atlatl also went missing. Fortunately, Sarah was found, and she said the creepiest yet full of mystery story of her experience. Sarah's story occupied 1/3 of the book. Along the way, it's kind of a bit hard to follow, but overall, it's still worth reading and re-reading to get the gist.
CHARACTERS
Tom was like a man full of experience and yet still got things unanswered. Myra's character, well, she's a smart and curious person. She's the one who told mythical stories, the one who gets Sarah and understands her quirks. In fact, Myra was the first one who believed the bear which Sarah drew. She got a lot of respect for the ancient people, tribes, and their remaining traces. William was more like a broken person but still managed to be kind. He experienced racism and is mostly the one who gives clarity and enlightenment to Tom. He is patient and yet knows when to stop.
Overall, the story moved at a brisk pace, thrilling and mysterious. That's why you'll keep reading it. I am a fan of the full-of-suspense kind of book, so I liked this. As much as I love the characters, I'll give it 3 out of 4 stars because some parts, especially Sarah's story, were really long and "good enough." But I'd still recommend this for people who like to learn about the past. For me, this is a great read nevertheless.
