Review of Just Give Me a Soft Place to Land
This novel Just Give Me a Soft Place to Land by Judy Condon is about three woman who have a love for knitting in common. In 1983 the three main characters Sarah, Caroline, and Beth make a plan to meet on Wednesdays to knit. What starts as a knitting club turns into what could only be described as therapy for them.
The knitting group is exactly as the title of the book suggest, a safe place for them to land. Over the years and multiple stories shared between them they all become close. The audience gets to learn about these three womans past and present lives as they grow older.
One thing I enjoyed about this novel is that it talks about different struggles that each one of us in life are going through or has gone through. From the start of this book, I envy Beth, Caroline, and Sarah's friendship and the way they are always there for each other. Another thing I love about this story is all of the important topics that were touched on. It shows that you should never judge a book by its cover because you truly never know what someone is going through.
While this book had so much potential it was poorly executed. It was lacking severely in editing. There were grammar errors every other page and had a tendency to add too much dialog. The characters talked as if they were narrators and not real people. This book also tended to be very repetitive and took a long time to get to the point. Another thing I disliked was the unnecessary details she added and how she tended to get names mixed up and even left things out. For example, there was a dog in the beginning and then at the end of the story the dog was never mentioned in the flashback from the beginning. And then by the end she added things to the story as if trying to hurry and wrap it up and added way too many details that the audience didn't need. For example, the whole group of girls that joined their knitting group just made it more confusing.
I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. Like I said this book had so much potential but between the errors and the unnecessary dialog I could barely get through it. I wanted to like it so much and I think I would have had it been edited a bit more before publishing. I took a point off for the many errors, I also docked another point off for the unnecessary details, and the last point I took off was for the way the woman talked as if they were not real people.
I would recommend this book to anyone just getting into reading as a teenager through adulthood. This brings up great points that many people have went through in their lives. I would not recommend this to experience readers or readers who do not like too much dialog.
