The book Hearts Set Free by Jess Lederman is a Christian literary fiction. The book is based on the influence of religion on our day-to-day life. This book follows multiple perspectives and switches between different time periods.

In the book, we see multiple characters who go through various problems in their own lives. They cling on to faith as a stronghold to help get through difficult times. We also see characters who have lost their faith. It mostly deals with doubts that people have in religion. They always question the presence of Christ in their lives. The book has a lot of components of historical fiction. It also features George Lemaitre, the father of the Big Bang Theory, who a physicist as well as a priest. We also come across John Johnson a heavyweight champion and some other characters. These plot lines start off very differently but later are woven so intricately that each story would have been incomplete without the other.

What I really like about this book was that, it dealt with a sensitive topic, like religion, very well. It follows mainly the Christian faith, but it explores it to the fullest. It has quotes from The Bible as well. There are psalms, scripture passages as well as you see how the characters, in the book, interpret each of these passages. You, also, have characters who are science focused and believe that religion is all a façade. Another aspect about the book that I liked was, that even though there where multiple perspectives, I never got confused as to whose perspective I was reading.

There were no aspects about the book that I did not like.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Though the book was nothing like I expected it to be, it was a wonderful book. I enjoyed every bit of the writing. In early stages when I was just meeting the characters, I was a little doubtful about liking the book. But as the plotline changed and I understood the significance of each one of them, it completely changed my perspective about the book. The book was professionally edited as I found no errors.

I would recommend this book to people who like religious fiction as well as historical fiction. As this book mainly revolves around Christianity, the church, and its faith, it might affect the reader’s feelings towards the book. Hence, be cautious about it. This book constantly changes timelines, hence, the reason it has a strong historical fiction element. There is very light profanity seen in the book. Trigger warning: death, bloodshed and other such events are seen in the book.
