I have always enjoyed reading books that belong to the genre of mystery novels and so; I was excited to read The Fugitive (The Border Series Book 5) by David Griffith. This book revolves around ex-intelligence officer Lonnie Bowers, who, along with his wife and children, is presently living in a remote ranch in the wild bush country. During his years of active service to the country, Lonnie was responsible for destroying some of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico. Later, he escaped to the countryside as he feared for his and his family’s safety. His new life is idyllic until one day he is shot by an unknown assassin on his farmland. While Lonnie’s brother saves his life during this encounter, the events that follow compel Lonnie to think his past has finally caught up with him.

Riddled with twists and turns in every chapter, the plot of this book is extremely gripping.Though I am avid reader of mystery novels, the story-line kept me guessing right till the end. One of the positives of this book is that though it is purportedly the fifth in a series, I could read it as a standalone novel. At no point was it difficult for me to follow the story, as the author has succinctly laid down the background of all the central characters right from the beginning. I was touched to read how the author has highlighted that it is familial relationships and deep friendships that stand with us in difficult times. Be it Lonnie’s brother, his wife, or his ex-boss, we see all of them rallying to keep him safe.

Unfortunately, at certain places in the book, these sub-plots in the book grab more attention than the central plot of the book. This is because many of the action scenes in the book are overly descriptive and laborious to read. The book would have greatly benefited if it had been written in a crisper language. Also, the graph of the central character, Lonnie Bowers, has not been sufficiently etched out and as a reader, you struggle to feel involved in his struggles.

However, the book is exceptionally well-edited and notwithstanding the minor issues mentioned above, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars , as I found it an enjoyable onetime read.

I would recommend this book to younger readers, who dream of joining agencies that safeguard national security. It is also a good book for those who have a yen for reading novels from the mystery or thriller genre. It is a book, you will enjoy diving into over a cosy weekend.
