Review of Randy the Irresistible

The book revolves around Randy who is a school leaver and busy studying. He is not quite sure what to do with his life and meanders on through life and the basic day to day activities. He has a wonderful family and support system who tries to help and guide him through this difficult process of becoming an adult and a functioning member of society.

I found this book easy to read and the beginning of the book starts off with a bang, with the introduction of the basic characters as well as their history. Although colorful descriptions are used to describe the various characters, you get the feeling that SM Goodier jumps around quite a bit in the description of the characters. The book has a humorous undertone as our main character progresses and deals with his friends and family on a daily basis.

Even though this book has a fast start it does start to wind down from chapter 4 where the reading almost gets monotonous and a bit tiring and dreary as it is just the same theme recurring from chapter to chapter. From about chapter 12 the story starts to get a bit more interesting as our main character meets another character who might help him to grow up. I would have liked to see the author describe the main character a bit more as to find out why Randy is so irresistible. Only a brief description is given about him. The main character comes across as a lost soul, self-indulgent and a selfish person who only thinks about himself and doesn’t really care about the people around him. He is only interested in what they can do for him and never thinks about what he can contribute back to the other people in his life. This is also a recurring theme throughout the book and you feel that you as the reader would just like to knock some sense into this character and it does make reading the book a bit frustrating. Furthermore it is very much a one sided story focussing 95% on the main character. I think it would have made the book a bit more interesting if the other characters had a bigger role in this book. Some swear words can be found almost in all of the chapters with the first in the preface on pg. 17 and the first sex scene is found in chapter 6 and then in chapter 10, 11 and 13. Some writing errors can be found in chapter 10 pg. 33:”How do know you like someone…”, as well as in chapter 20 pg. 36:”…..he was slowing dying inside.”.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. Even though it was an easy read and had some humour to it, the book does get monotonous and you wish that it had a bit more of a story line.

I would recommend this book for readers who fall into the young adult group, 21 – 30 years of age.

I rated this book at 2 stars as well. I did note, too, that it relied too much on Randy's character and didn't give us much else. I enjoyed this review.
