The book: Can I be Frank? by Rob Wyatt is the first book in the ‘Father Francis’ series. The next book in the series is “Blooming Rose”. This series follows Father Francis who moves in from England right after his ordination to his new parish, Saint Francis of Assisi, Palmetto Lake, Florida. It follows his perspective in the first-person narrative.

The story begins with us seeing Father Francis (Frank), who has arrived at the airport; facing several problems not only because of the language gap but also, he believes that it is his bad luck. He must go through various proceedings before he finally reaches the church. At the church, he meets the Miss Martha Moro, who is the church administrator. Father Frank, with his record, wears the altar server’s vestment instead of the chasuble. After the mass, he meets Mrs. Carly Chamois, the wife of a wealthy businessman, Mr. Gene Chamois. She tries a few advances on him but he turns her down. Mr. Gene Chamois, a man who practically owns the entire town, is also one of the biggest donors to the diocese and literally, keeps the place running. But as Frank’s luck goes, he finds himself in a tiff with him and is left with some disturbing rumors about him. He finds himself without an income, a congregation or diocese. All he has with him are a church administrator, Martha; an atheistic doctor, Dr. Ginny Pierce; and a local judge-cum-car-dealer, Judge Karl Matthews. Disturbed with all this, Frank finds himself in a weird place with the diocese and is scared that he will be sent back home before he completes his assigned year in the parish.

The aspects that I liked about this book, was that it was based on the life of a priest. On very few occasions do we understand the dilemmas that a priest must go through. Also, you get a view of the politics that go on within the church. There are times when the church is put in difficult positions because of the ever-changing times. Another thing that I liked was that under every chapter number, there was a quote from the Bible that sums up the chapter in one sentence.

There was no aspect in the book that I did not like.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. In a world where religion is a very touchy topic for people, this book handles the topic quite well. Also, the content is hilarious as you see him talking to the saints on various instances. The book was well edited.

I would recommend this book to people with an understanding of the Bible, as there are many quotes quoted from the Bible. Also, the book is fun and will have you turning pages once you get to the main plot. There are few instances of profanity in the book. It does not comprise of any sexual content.
