If you ever want to read a book with a 'feel good' vibe, without much suspence yet enough to make you look for answers, then Frank Waltmire's Visiting Uncle John is the one for you. It's story revolves around family, love and upto certain extent, loathe. It might feel a bit monotonous in the beginning but as you keep reading, it will surely make you want to know 'what happens next?' It has a warm storyline with interesting turn of events.
John Parker or as referred as Uncle John is a 60 year-old man who lands in prison for shooting Garett Brooks at Square Lake Inn. His 29 year-old nephew Eli Parker visits his favourite uncle at the correctional facility and discovers interesting facts about him. He loved listening to Uncle John narrating stories of his younger days. The story gets interesting as we read since a few secrets are revealed during Eli's visits. Eli's life goes through a lot of changes amidst those visits. Uncle John was clearly fond of his nephews and niece and so were they.
The best thing about the book is how it is narrated not only through Eli's perspective but also through the other characters mentioned, expressing their views and feelings on the events that took place. Also it's so interesting to learn about Uncle John's earlier days. There are times one can draw a parallel between Eli and John Parker. I don't have any negative comments for the book. Although it may seem a little boring in the first few chapters. It establishes an engrossing effect after a few untold truths come to light. By the end of the book, one would have all the answers to their questions as everything starts to get together like a puzzle.
There were a couple of minor errors that I spotted. Although it didn't pause my flow of reading. I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for its vivid description of the characters ,the scenes and the atmosphere. I didn't give 4 due repetitions of details while describing stuff to others characters. I wouldn't recommend this book for kids due to the presence of some sexual content. Young adults stepping into the responsible side of adulthood or the adults facing the bitter-sweet challenges of family would enjoy the book.
