Review of Kalayla
Kalayla is a story revolving around three women, from three different generations. Lena Manero Barzetti is a businesswoman, aged 72, lives in the fourth floor of an apartment with no lifts, and wears only black colored clothing. Kalayla LeeRoyce, a 11 year old kid, who has come to the apartment opposite to Lena’s with her mother Maureen LeeRoyce O’Rourke, is completely shattered after she gets to know the story that her mother told was a complete lie, to the extent that her parents can be awarded for “best liars in the world”. On the other hand, Maureen faces a lot of things as a widow, balancing her jobs and her inlaw’s family as well and tries hard to raise Kalayla. Lena has her share of hardships in life, losing her husband and two of her kids, while having no attachment with the other two kids. It seems that she also has a shady secret. Jeannie Nicholas has written how their lives interlinked with each other in this book. The plot of this story is in the years 1999 and 2000.
The story is a first–person narrative kind, and all the three main characters have taken their turns to move the story. Nicholas has managed to impressively express the mentality of women in the ages of 11, 30 and 72. And neither of the characters was depicted perfectly, each of them had their own level of complexity, which makes the readers to relate with the story. This story also deals with racism, abuse, honesty, love, life after the loss of someone you love, family, and friendship. I love how the three main characters think about the other characters and change their beliefs with their own issues.
In some parts of the book, I felt Kalayla behaved or spoke way too matured for her age, it would have been better if she was 13 years old.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well professionally edited. The reason I give this book full 4 stars is for the theme the author has chosen to discuss and the positive vibe she has given in the book, that too during the timeline of the plot.
I would suggest this book to people who are interested to read realistic kind of books with a happy ending. People who have faced the above mentioned issues can read Kalayla, as they can relate with them. This books gives the readers hope to start their lives fresh.
