We all have one or one hundred problems we might want to run away from but ultimately no matter how far we go, our problems will always follow us if the issues we have are of our own doing. In ByTheWay by Dennis Santos, a man named Dalan will do the impossible to run away from the memories of the worst days of his young life. With the help of his new friend Buddy, he might just be able to leave everything behind and get the fresh start he feels he is in desperate need of. But as the author wisely puts it, “Distance isn’t the answer when the problem is you.” Dalan will have to face what many of us tend to ignore. Is he the victim of a cruel and unforgiving God? Or is he the only one getting in the way of his happiness?

From the beginning, this book had me emotionally invested in the main character’s life. Just when it seemed like Dalan would catch a break, something unexpected was always waiting on the next page. The author cleverly writes a romance, adventure, and spiritual story all in the same book. The romance made you yearn for the innocence of a first love. The adventures Dalan partakes in make anyone want to become a venturous person. Lastly, the spiritual parts remind you that time on Earth is limited but give you the hope that our souls will live on even if it's lightyears away from our beloved planet.

While the reader is on a journey with Dalan wondering when his luck will change, the author adds a character to the story that completely changes the way you thought the book was going to go. This is probably the only thing that bothered me about the book.

Although I didn’t love the twist the author put in the story, I enjoyed reading it and it did not take away from making it a good book. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

This book is great for any reader given that it has the right amount of everything in it. Even though the romance parts are not explicit and leave things to the reader’s imagination, this book might be better suited for young adults and older. As you embark on reading ByTheWay keep in mind these words from the writer, “Always expect the unexpected, and always accept what is given.”
