Review of Kalayla
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a story of three individuals, there paths meeting at a certain point in their lives which results as a turning point. Kalayla and Maureen, two people with completely different personalities finding peace and comfort in their neighbor, Lena.
Kalayla, Maureen and Lena have one thing in common, loneliness. Kalayla, a troubled a child who was able to adapt to every situation she faced. A rebellious 11 old girl raised by her single mom, Maureen. Maureen, a person who had a lot on her plate after the death of her husband, it was as if she lost her will to live, the lose of her husband tearing her apart from inside but being able collect herself after such an event made her stronger than she was ever before. It is said that everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you made, which can be perfectly used to describe Lena's life. A choice she made as a young girl deeply in love was the turning point of her life. She had a second chance to do things differently with Kalayla.
The story is written from the point of view of these three characters thus giving you a glimpse of there personality, emotions and actions. I found Kalayla as the most interesting and entertaining character. Her witty replies and comebacks are on point. Kalayla and Lena's bickering is what kept me interested in reading more. The way how the emotions of the characters were express felt too real.
The book is set at a steady pace, not to fast or not to slow. This book is totally different from what I usually read which makes this book pretty much fresh and new to read. There are secrets, past regrets and happiness are involved which kept the story going. The ending is what matters the most, how all of them found the closure they needed. The past lives of characters are explained in the most straightforward and direct way in the story. This story has really great potential.
This story delts with various themes such as racial discrimination, domestic violence, healing and guilt. This book teaches us that life must go on, no matter what situation you face you must accept it and try to move on. Moving is the only way you can find hope to heal yourself. Lena, who was a victim of domestic violence was able to heal from her scary past was just by accepting it and trying to make a difference with Kalayla, who was her second chance to make things right which she wasn't able to do so with her sons. I, therefore rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book can be read by young adults and parents.
