The Society of Living Poets , written by Andrew McCollister aims to interconnect the lives of four distinct poets. There is this really fine lens that many people fail to look at when interacting with people on a day to day basis and that is the hidden danger that no one really knows unless they read our thoughts. Throughout this book we can see the shift the author takes from the complete gruesome to the life of someone that spends their life devoted to their God.

One of my favorite aspects to this book is actually seen in the first chapter of the book and it’s a poem called “The Mask” by Tyler Lupus and the reason why this poem resonates with me is that there is this idea of hiding behind a mask meaning that we really don’t know who we are actually interacting with on a daily basis,

This book isn’t mean for kids because the first chapter gets gruesome in which this Lupus character develops as this monster on the thirst for murder. I also don’t enjoy how a lot of this negativity is usually based upon one specific event and unfortunately we see this person fuse themselves with the next story and it is upsetting to me that they didn’t get what they deserve.

I would give this book a 4/4 since I can relate some of this to the Tell Tale Heart. I’m on the more gruesome type of stories so this is perfectly fine with my preference. It’s also a good way to learn that not every poet is alike.

For the target audience, I would say that this book belongs to anyone who is willing to learn a thing or two about poetry. This book is awesome for high school students because I don’t know if you guys are young enough to read Tell Tale Heart. Well I did in high school and dreaded all of it. Well this book is kinda similar where we dive into the lives of these four remarkable people and how poetry is influencing their lives. I’m not sure if some of these parts are suitable for kids, parental discretion allowed. I would say that the only thing in here that I would give these kids to read is the actual text of the poetry itself, just so they can learn a little bit of culture. I didn’t think too much of it when I was growing up but came to the realization that it's crucial to know these things for the sake of conversation.
