Review of Always Before Me
Always Before Me by John Servant takes you along a journey through the downward spiral of two priests and a sinner. A Priests’ plights through trials and tribulations with the constant companion of his faith and his God. The story questions the manmade ideologies of justice and delves deeper into the hearts of man. By utilizing a combination of virtues given to man by God, the overall theme of blooming where one is planted is constructed. The author takes you on a quest of faith and persecution to instill in the reader's mind the importance of each component to the works of the Lord. The book revolves around the fundamental beliefs of modern-day Catholicism and the true meaning of faith. The intertwined story focused on the trials of 3 men who, through imprisonment, were able to strengthen their faith in God and touch the hearts of others through continual servitude.
I thoroughly enjoyed the message of the book. A constant reminder that all things work together for good. Although the characters faced trying situations, they remained faithful and because of that, they were used by God to help others. Bad things may happen to us, but God can work through us even in the most trying of days.
The characters and their driving forces remain the same throughout the story. Their built-up personalities are set up in a way by which we, the audience, can understand why the character would make certain decisions and take specific actions. As an individual that is not well versed in the catholic doctrine, it was fairly easy to understand certain aspects of the book. The areas that I had little knowledge of were presented in a way by which I was able to grasp what was going on.
However, at the beginning of the book, the author frequently moved from the past to the present to the point where the lines became blurred. It got a bit confusing trying to keep up with the timeline at first. The use of parenthesis throughout the story was implemented strongly. Because of this, it was difficult to understand who was speaking and at which point their dialogue ended.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. Overall, this piece was very enlightening and made me look within myself and question the solidarity of my own faith. However, there were some grammatical errors within the text coupled with unclear points of view.
This book is geared towards religious individuals that may be down on their luck or struggling to figure out why bad things are happening to them. This book may not be a good fit for non-religious individuals.
