Review of Kalayla
You may be related by blood, but love and respect are what bind you together. Kalayla will take you through an interesting story that is narrated from three different viewpoints. This book will pull at your heartstrings!
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is an interesting story about an 11-year-old girl called Kalayla, born in a mixed-race family. She goes through life struggles, setbacks, and difficulties that she tries so hard to overcome. Her story is intertwined with Maureen, her mother, and Lena, their next-door neighbor. Maureen and Lena also don’t have it easy in life. They all have personal struggles, which reminded me that, indeed, life could be full of hardship. But what are you doing about it?
The book has many themes, but the most predominant one was how difficult it can be for a mother, especially a mother who is in an abusive relationship or struggles as a single mother. Other themes include homophobia, racism, and domestic violence, which have been perfectly woven throughout the story.
When reading this book, I felt as if I was there, experiencing what Kayla was going through. This is because the author places the reader perfectly into the scene, and you are taken away into their world, which makes it even harder to put the book down. In other words, you can tell from the author's writing that she is indeed a very talented and creative author.
There is just so much that I loved about the book, but just to mention a few, the story was well constructed with strong and interesting character development. I felt like these three unique characters uniquely reflected our lives. The fact that each character had to tell their stories, share their feelings and justify their actions kept me turning page after page. I was hooked!
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was exceptionally well-edited. I did not find any error, which made the book engaging, and enjoyable to read. The book had very realistic characters with a great storyline. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading stories about perseverance, family trials, and forgiveness.
However, I would not recommend the book to younger readers because it has some profanity and also readers who are sensitive to violence. This is because of domestic violence, which has been displayed in some parts of the book.
In conclusion, I am looking forward to reading more books from this author in the future.
