Review by jomana_3 -- Filling Up a Hole
Filling Up a Hole by Jerry A. Greenberg is a fiction book that is considered a self-help book. It talks about the hole that is in every person and how people deal with this hole. In the book, we follow the story of the Phillips family that collapses out of a sudden. Each member of this family has a hole and a different way to deal with it. Boyce Phillips, a family man who escapes any stressful situations and always aims to go the easy way, neglects to spend a good time with his wife, Dodie, and his kids, Tommy and Paul. To his kids, Boyce has always been a no-show. This life isn’t the adventurous life Dodie had always fantasized about. Everything is going on normally until some secrets get revealed about Paul and his father, Boyce; Dodie can’t take it anymore.
The book starts with an inner conversation between Boyce and himself, showing his regret for being so passive and oblivious. He also regrets his neglect to understand himself and his family. He realizes he has not been there for his wife and kids when they needed him. I liked this opening, and it grabbed my attention. I finished this book in one sitting; I refused to stop reading until I finished it. It is a pretty short and fast-paced book. Moreover, I liked the character development, as we follow not only Boyce’s story but also follow the story of each member of his family. I also liked the message behind the story, and it made me look at things a bit differently. Furthermore, I liked the ending of the book. It was neither a happy ending nor a sad one, but it was realistic, and it was a satisfying closure to the story.
There wasn’t anything I disliked about the book. I found only one minor error throughout the whole book. Therefore, I can say it was professionally edited.
To me, Filling Up a Hole deserves a 4 out of 4 stars rating. The book was very engaging and eventful. I liked many characters in the book, like Dodie, Tommy, and Clarence. Their character development was done well. The author told us a brief story behind each character to introduce these characters to us. I felt sympathetic to many characters, which tells me that the author did a good job with the characters. As I mentioned earlier, there was nothing I disliked about the book. It is a highly recommended read.
I recommend this book to people who are interested in reading about human rights and civil rights. The book especially talks about women’s rights and African-Americans’ rights. Moreover, those who like reading self-help books would enjoy this book, as it discusses different topics in this area. The book also discusses some psychological topics and shows you how some characters think and why they act the way they do. I also recommend this book to people who want to start reading books but don’t know where to start. The book is fast-paced, and the story is engaging and can encourage people to read more books.
