Fighting To Breathe by Jong Yi is a novel which addresses head on the racism, the protagonist;Ginger Kim, a nurse and her fellow Asian colleagues face in the hospital system. The book is brutal in the way it addresses the racism, bullying and workplace intimidation that Ginger Kim and her colleagues, both Asian and people of colour face in the hospitals they work in. The book switches between Ginger Kim and her care nurse; Hyun. Highlighting the way each woman deals with the travails such a toxic workplace environment subjects them to. This is only amplified with the outbreak of COVID-19 disease.

The positive thing I loved about this book was how it brought to light the blatant racism in medical facilities. It exposes it in all it's unadulterated glory and in a heartwrenching manner. I loved how the author; Jong Yi though dealing with an intense subject matter, also highlighted heartwarming moments in the book. I loved the fact, the book was not all doom and gloom.

I do not have anything negative to say about this book. It deals with a subject matter, many people are scared to talk about for fear of upsetting the status quo. It is needed especially given the social climate of today. If I was to pick a negative aspect, I will say the book was too short(only 152 pages). But, that is just me nitpicking.

I will score this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book hit all the right notes for me. It handled delicate subject matters like racism and workplace intimidation to Asians and people of colour in a blunt but also heartwarming manner. Plus, I did not notice any typos.

I will recommend this book to just about anyone. Especially to those who are so used to turning a blind eye to issues like this. It is definitely an eye opener in the best possible way.
