Review by sofia bano -- Fighting To Breathe by Jong Yi
Fighting to Breathe is a heart-wrenching story of a nurse written by Jong Yi. It follows the story of Ginger Kim who is born in Korea. After the massacre in Korea during the Gwangju Democratization movement, her brother moves to America. Ginger also follows him hoping for a bright and safe future. However, she has to face racial discrimination in all the hospitals that she works at. The racial discrimination follows not only her but also her colleagues. She wants to raise her voice against injustice but is unable to do so. During her work as a nurse, the coronavirus hits the world and she also contracts it. Coronavirus causes her to become unconscious for five weeks during which another Korean nurse Hyun takes care of her.
Racial discrimination has been rising in various countries, especially during the epidemic. Asian people are being targeted everywhere as the source of the virus. In such times, this book gives in insight into how this racial discrimination affects the lives of people. It not only shows extreme forms of racial discrimination but also various stereotypes that exist about various countries and nations.
The book is written in a flashback manner. It follows the story of Ginger being in hospital under the care of Hyun as well as the past life story of Ginger simultaneously. The book is quite well written. Despite the flashback manner, the plot develops very smoothly and keeps the reader interested in the story throughout. The writer has the ability to express the emotions of the characters very well. It captures the essence of the struggles of being a nurse particularly if you are in a foreign country. Although the book is about how racial discrimination affects the lives and mental health of people I think there should have been some positivity. Although racial discrimination exists everywhere good people also exist. The world is not full of bad people only. The author does show moments of support from other people but they are the type of people who are also facing discrimination due to some reasons. It would have been much better if a strong white character supported the protagonist at some point but that did not happen. If we take that into account, then this book is another form of racial discrimination against white people. Anyhow, this book was about racial discrimination against a Korean nurse, hence, it does not affect the overall concept of the book.
Despite that slight problem, I think the book still deserves four out of four stars. Considering the author is new to writing, this book is a great accomplishment. It has a great story, great execution and it is exceptionally well-edited.
I would recommend this book to children above 13. The book contains some sensitive topics such as racial discrimination, kidnapping, torture, life-death struggles, etc. So, if you are sensitive to these topics, I would recommend you to not read this book.
