Review by Hanna Smart -- Fighting To Breathe by Jong Yi
In this inspiring book, Fighting To Breathe , Jong Yi composes a story depicting the main character: Ginger's life, where as a young child, both her and her family face governmental depression after the assassination of her country's president and the replacement of a wicked governor. She has to experience the great cruelty occurring in her country of South Korea, and of how her family, her brother especially does not hesitate when it's time to show piety for his country and his beliefs.
Throughout the entire book, the story changes between different timelines in Ginger's life, showing Ginger as a Registered Nurse as she works her way through her career facing extreme racism and ethnocentrism from the Caucasian staff at the different hospitals she transfers to in hope of finding one where she is accepted for who she is but to no avail. The other timeline constantly switches to Ginger fighting for her life, after her organs are under stress from trying to overcome the deadly and highly contagious COVID-19 which had took over her body. Notwithstanding, Ginger finds great care and comfort from her friend Autumn, who also knows how it feels to be discriminated against as she faces the harsh truth of the heartless and unsupportive actions that people have toward the disabled. Heartwarming scenes are portrayed as Ginger and Autumn both lean and depend on each other for love and support.
The author does not delay to show how it is to be a frontline worker as it shows how Ginger's day shift nurse Hyun, gives all that she has to save her patient's life while trying to deal with her troublesome co-worker Clara. The story is a wrap-up of how during Ginger's life she is constantly and valiantly fighting to defend what she believes in despite of the extreme odds and the racist and unjust people in authority. But one would raise the question how did she contract the virus? Was it through natural causes of unknown exposure or was it because of her evil staff members who she works with? Guess you'd have to read to find out!
What enlightened me most about Fighting To Breathe , was of how the author portrayed Ginger as a strong individual, both mentally and physically, throughout all the pain and survival she has to undergo. The book was very well written, the way the author illustrated the two separate timelines in Ginger's life and how they both meet in one accord near the ending was exquisite and really allowed the story to shine out.
There was nothing I disliked about this book, the storyline, words used and plot was amazing, it honestly could not have been better!
I will genuinely give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars . There was not even one grammatical error, and very well professionally edited. It was easy to understand, and gradually outlined different details, which played out wonderfully throughout the story.
I recommend this book to individuals who face racist discrimination, and who feel stuck in difficult situations, due to their race or skin color. This book will help it's readers to have a stronger sense of determination, confidence and encourages that no matter the circumstances, we should always stand up for what we believe in!
