Review by Jacqueline Dimka -- Dreams Are To Be Lived
Dreams are to be lived is a book exploring not just one's dreams but also the effects of mental instability. Bobby Leverret is a seventeen year old teenager who would never give up his dreams of being an artist no matter his father's view on him pursuing a future in art. Bobby's father Al Leverret is not much of an antagonist and Jerry Greenberg shows this by allowing us to see Al's inner battle with another personality aside himself, this personality being his Grandfather Simon Leverret, who also didn't let Al pursue his dreams of being an architect. From reading the book we can understand that Al definitely wanted the best for Bobby, but his struggle with his father going on in his head proved otherwise, giving the impression that Al wanted to end Bobby's life. But deep down Al did try to fight for his sanity to prove he meant no harm and he loved Cindy his wife and Bobby too. At the beginning of the book it was hard to decipher if there would be merely a major climax to the story because from the title it was almost as if it would all be about Bobby proving to his father how worthy he is his to study art. But Greenberg exploited other themes such as trust, love, essence of family and positive effects of communication in a relationship. It was definitely an interesting read.
The positive aspects will be first of all, the author's ability to explain the character's thoughts to his audience. And insight on their thoughts helped to understand the reasons for the actions taken by each character. For example,
from Bobby's thoughts that were shared we can see that he wasn't trying to disrespect his father, but was trying to prove that his love for his art could help him through whatever difficulties his father said he could face while studying art. Secondly, another positive aspect was how the author was able to take the reader carefully through every event, which was slow at first and almost boring, but it was worth it because future events were better understood. Thirdly, the title of the book was adequately explained in the story. Greenberg did a nice job at expressing why Bobby's dreams had to be lived. Bobby knew what he wanted to show the world and his passion drove him to prove his point.
I have no negative aspect concerning the book at all.
My rating for the book will be four out of four stars. My reasons are first of all because the author definitely did an amazing job at his pen work, showing the need to pursue a dream and the importance of family. The second reason will be because the book was absolutely void of any form of spelling, grammar or typo error.
As for the recommended audience, I think this book will be suitable for young adults especially young who are picking out future professions in line with their passionate. As for older adults it is also recommended because of the topic of family. I do no recommend it for children because of the sensitivity of the topic of mental instability.
