When a parent dies people need to deal with a lot of things: grief, funeral arrangements, inheritance, personal belongings from the deceased… but how does one deal with a lifetime of unanswered questions and a suspicious amount of money?

The Senator’s Suitcase is a book about family, loyalty and love — and so, so much more. Mitch Engel’s 4th novel starts with Troy Davenport going through his late mother’s belongings and discovering a storage unit with only one item inside: a suitcase containing more than 5 million dollars in cash. Without previous knowledge of that money he now must find out if the exemplary Senator Beth Davenport was really that righteous, but if getting answers about his mother’s life was close to impossible while she was alive now that she’s dead Troy can barely find where to begin.

In my opinion, this book has no negative aspects. It deals with a variety of real world issues with such sensibility that I couldn’t help to shed a tear or two throughout the reading. Intern conflicts about sexuality, troubled relationships with parents, abuse, sexism, homophobia, it has everything… but also friendship, kindness, acceptance and love, so much love. Beth Davenport is now my greatest feminine role model and by far my favorite aspect of this book. Her character and the way she does the best she can with what she has at hand makes me believe that I can be this versatile and smart in life too.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars, wishing I had a higher rating to attribute. Engel writes in a way that reminds us that people are multifaceted beings with good and bad inside of them, doing what they believe to be the right thing. I also didn’t find any kind of error through the reading, the book was well edited.

I’m recommending this book to basically everyone in my life because it embraces so many aspects of human relations with each other and themselves, it’s an amazing book for those interested in characters well constructed and deep emotions.
