Review by ANJANA-thats my name -- The Senator's Suitcase
Mitch Engel's The Senator's Suitcase , revolves around the unearthing of a secret storage locker of the late Senator Beth Davenport hiding a single suitcase of unaccounted cash amounting to millions of dollars. The methodical excavation of the heavily guarded life of Beth soon follows- a mammoth task undertaken by her only son, Troy Davenport who also happens to be the only surviving Davenport. The process soon brings to light Beth’s dark past of an eerie childhood, the story of an exceptional bond of love between three friends, and a relentless struggle for power, where human connections are explored and glass ceilings are broken one after the other. The highly progressive narrative marks itself as a tribute to human resilience to live outside the labels and boxes of society. Though the story poignantly addresses many issues of great relevance, it revolves around the central ideas of love and sexuality and the truth that even when life seems infinite and wholesome, it comes with a fair amount of secrets and baggage which are better left untouched.
The most positive aspects of the book include the portrayal of a strong woman character whose actions are neither glorified, nor sidelined but rather portrayed in all its flawed efficiency, displaying the destructive tendencies alongside the benevolent and nourishing ones. One could not fail to admire the willful strength of Beth Davenport, throughout her journey from the young Lizzie Monroe to the married Elizabeth Davenport to Senator Beth Davenport. The enormous visual aptitude of the story can be seen in the molding of the different characters who serve as evidence of the skillful and precise penmanship of the author. The writing becomes even more eventful owing to the creative tactics employed by the author to tie together the past and future of everyone involved. The penmanship that describes the events of a past long-lost in time, into neat nested stories within the narrative offers new revelations and clarity at every point.
However, the story does get repetitive, when the different perspectives of the same incidents are narrated one after the other, thereby hampering the pace of reading. Also, the editing could have been better, as the grammatical errors abound at various points.
The heartwarming story turned out to be a very easy read and a page-turner for the most part. The characters are vivid and lifelike. It would be better suited to a widely read audience, who will be more receptive to the progressive and unconventional plot discussed in the story. I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 , deducting a point for the errors mentioned above.
