Review by ecor -- The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles
The center of the story is Lucy MacMiel, a successful, and good-looking defense lawyer in Atlanta,Georgia. She marries Luke Osbourne who is an Opthalmic Surgeon, colleague and close friend to Lucy's father. She's at the top of her career, she has a caring and loving husband. She seems to have everything. But everything changed when Hower Bain,a famous, and charismatic faith healer enters the picture. He is accused of rape of a girl. And Lucy is one of his defendants. They started not in good terms but Lucy is drawn to this man and leaves everything behind for him. She follows him to Africa and a problem arises. Full of regret, she went back to Georgia to start over again. And when she is finally getting it together, Hower Bain reappears to her life. Is he still worth it? Will she sacrifice everything again for this man that she loves?
At first I didn't like the story because I cannot fathom how Lucy can leave behind Luke for someone like Hower. But after some time, I approached the story at a different perspective and knowing that they'll have an affair, I accepted the things that will happen. I appreciate the story now. I really like how it went. It surprised me many times and I find myself gripping for the next scene. I like the surprises that unfold. I find the ending superb. It gave it a strong finality. I love Luke and Elizabeth's character in this story. Luke is kind to Lucy even after what she did to him. He is also a man of justice, he sticks with the truth even if there are consequences. Elizabeth is warm and selfless. She is the only one in the family that treats Lucy like a family. She is a very kind and loving person.
I like the surprises in this story but I also hated that there are things that were never hinted. I was just surprised that it happened already. Like it was some sort of fast forward. For instance, Lucy already having an affair with Hower. It just shocked me. Although Lucy is the main character here, I sometimes find myself not liking her character or her decisions. She is self-centered, sometimes emotionless, she only cares about what she wants. She does not think about the consequences. It was a really bad idea to fall for a guy like Hower. I find Hower's character repulsive. He is manipulative and cruel for going after Lucy.
I give The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles a 3 out of 4 stars. The story is intriguing and gripping. There is a few typo especially on some articles.
The Spirit of Want explores mature contents so I recommend this book to the adult audience especially those who want something a bit thrilling.
