Review by Joan642 -- The Finesser by Patrice Brown
This book is what I consider a refreshing novella, featuring Jody, who acquired most of the vices you can think of, and Passion, a woman with unusual powers, who has made many attempts to find love. The Finesser by Patrice Brown is a delightful romance novella that will keep you glued until the end.
Jody guessed luck was on his side after he met Passion, a well-off single woman in her late 30s. She offered to help him get his life straight, but Jody, being a con person, reckoned she was an easy target and wanted to outsmart her. He tended to always get himself into more problems due to his terrible choices. Passion, who knew more than she was letting on, had other plans for him and wasn’t ready to let him go unless he paid up what he owed her. She could just cast a spell, and his life would be more miserable than it was before. Will Jody be able to make right his wrongdoings before it’s too late? Or would he ignorantly come up with another spectacular means to get more money off her?
I was compelled to read this book because of its captivating title. There were so many things I liked about this book. For instance, it had a straightforward plot, with a few twists to spice it up. Plus, the writing style was simple and easy to understand. This book was written in the third-person narrative, and each chapter began with either Passion's or Jody’s character as its main focus. The characters were all well developed. I enjoy reading books where the protagonists have their fair share of weaknesses, and Jody and Passion had just that, which makes relating with characters much easier.
Honestly, there were just a few things I disliked about this book. I noticed a few errors, but they were not enough to disrupt my reading flow, so it appears that this book is professionally edited. The author’s name was not written on the book cover. It says there that The Finesser was edited by "edited by," which I counted as one of the few errors I noticed. I feel this book would have been better if it had an epilogue because there were still things that needed to be set straight.
Having read every chapter of this book, I cheerfully rate The Finesser 3 out of 4 stars. I removed one star because of the few dislikes I stated above. I recommend this book to adults who enjoy reading romantic novellas and wouldn’t mind several erotic scenes and the occasional use of profane language.
