Review by Whats-the-name -- The Reel Sisters
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a novel about five female fly fishers. At first there were only four women fishing together, Rose and Sophie being experienced fishers, and Amanda and Veronica being beginners. One day, when they were fishing in the river, a girl comes swept downstream, screaming for help. Veronica manages to rescue her, and they take her to their cabin and listen to her stories. The girl's name is Melody, who becomes the fifth member of the group. They all become close-knit friends and fish, laugh, cry and spend time together on weekends, away from home.
While the charming and hilarious women look like having perfectly happy life, each of them have different issues in life. Then one day, an event occurs that forces them to face their inner insecurity, while also causing another sadness as well. That is when they decide to face the mental rigor together.
What I liked about this book is that the narrator changes between the five women chapter after chapter, and it was interesting to see things from different people's view. Actually, the author did not give any headings to show the pauses between chapters. Instead, she just wrote the narrator's name on top of each section. The funny thing here is, even when I forgot whose name on the title was, I could sometimes tell it by just continuing reading and analyzing the words used. Some of the characters have an iconic way of speaking, and that helped me identify who it was.
What I found interesting in this book is the way they treat their problems after the hardest moment. In the past, some of them used to hide the pain, but over time, being together with the bosom girls, they change and begin to talk and share it. I think the lesson here is, it is always better not to let the negative emotions get the control of the entire life, no matter how painful experience there might be.
There was not a thing for me to dislike this book, but I did notice a few grammatical errors, although they do not affect the contextual meaning. Besides, I wish there were more story of the past and the interior pain and struggle of each character, for the psychology behind is what makes a story outstanding.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was an interesting book with five women's life stories, and it was pretty well edited. But I would not give a full score, because I want to expect more description of feelings.
I recommend this book to those like me who love reading books with female main characters. It does not matter whether the reader is fly fisher or non-fly fisher. Anyone can enjoy this book, even without an experience of fishing, because the story is much more than just fishing.
