Review by Ikaye -- The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a story of four unique women who are so different from one another but share a bond of friendship and the like of fly fishing. Despite their age differences and different character traits, Sophie, Rose, Veronica, and Amanda are close friends and they enjoy an escape up in Rose’s Colorado cabin to spend time with each other and of course, fish in the river. On this trip, they got the shock of their lives when a naked girl was floating down the river. Soon, the four became five. Melody, a photographer, has been reeled into the sisterhood where she felt at home. It is a story of women facing their issues and problems and how they learn and grow from the experience.
The story was written very well. I like how each chapter is from a different perspective of each character. It allowed us to get to know the character more through her eyes and thoughts. It’s fascinating to see the story unfolds from each character’s perspective. It was quite interesting for me to read from different points of view of each character. I was really like in their shoes and I understand much better why they did what they did and why they said what they said. Books like this that made me experience extraordinary things are worth reading.
I also like how the author incorporates the five parts of a fly rod to the five women in the story. It was so smart of the author to do that. It is so hard to represent someone as an object because you have to be very specific about the reason why she is something like that. It is also a great technique to hook readers to read the book. The journey of reading the book and knowing the reason why she is this specific part of a fly rod was very fun. It also reminded me of the book, The Baby-Sitters Club, but much more mature. It is like the second coming-of-age. It is indeed true that you never stop learning in life. You can never stop growing. Life teaches you a lot of lessons that will make you braver, stronger, and better than before.
What I don’t like about is the ending. It is somehow anticlimactic. I was looking forward to how each character would find answers to her problems. Two or three were given a closure in getting her questions and problems answered but the other characters were not able to. It is somehow an open-ended story for some characters, leaving the readers to draw their conclusions to themselves. But, it is still a good book.
Overall, I give this novel 4 out of 4 stars. It is one of the most real books I’ve read so far. You can relate to each character, if not all then at least the majority of them. I recommend it to all readers, not only women, who enjoy stories of friendship and growth.
