Review by _khush_p -- Spirit of the Season by Brian Lamont
Spirit of The Season by Brian Lamont is a book about a candle maker’s son. His satisfaction, his displeasure, his euphoria and his sorrow. The plot revolves around the chandler’s strange son and his ways of indulging in life. The chandler’s boy, as he was known, was just an innocent little boy whose life would take unimaginable turns. The story plot is quite simple yet bewitching, that of a boy who grows up in constant ups and downs, and finds happiness at one part of his life which fades away the next instant. And like any other story, this book too takes a cliché turn, as the now grown up boy finds his will to live again and throws himself into helping the fellow villagers.
Reading through the book you may find yourself being captivated by the extraordinary detailed definitions of scenery, situations and appearances. When talking about detailed definitions, let’s not forget about the beautiful descriptions that refer to Christmas. A red coat with gold buttons, the golden bell, gifts for the children, mistletoe, using socks to wrap in gifts and so many such teeny tiny hints. These references and descriptions make it easy to relate the book to Christmas.
However, this book teaches a great deal to anyone reading. Be it an adult or a child. The book heavily depicts the applications of morals and ethics. How the Chandler’s son deals with sorrow and pain like any normal person would, yet his ways of humanness would stun the reader. It might as well overwhelm someone with a tender and dainty heart. It is an excellent read for children.
The only displeasures anyone would find in it would be the fact that the characters are nameless and some characters just disappear out of nowhere. Some characters seem to be mentioned just to relate the book more to Christmas and some characters have no story around them at all. A slight bit irksome if you ask me. The start seems confusing as some situations are repeated. One might just find it insignificant to write so much about the boy’s childhood and young days, although it plays a huge role in building the past and the story.
No spelling or grammatical errors to be found by yours truly. And so, I rate the Spirit of The Season 4 out of 4 stars. It is a fun book for anyone who wants to start reading. Similarly, anyone who is looking for some relaxation can turn to this book. As mentioned before, a very good book for children to teach them values. Not just kids, this book can teach an adult to enjoy the little things in life again. Something that we have forgotten to do in this rushed life. I’d advice you to sit back and enjoy this book with a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate and let yourself relish the beauty in simplicity.
