Review by Ivvie Ivanova -- Rescued by E. Alan Fleischauer
Rescued by E. Alan Fleischauer is a dynamic Western novel packed with action and suspense. It follows JT Thomas who doesn't mean to get mixed up into trouble but when he does he sees it through to the end. He is loyal to his friends and stands fiercely against his enemies, fighting with his guns and all his being. The book is the first in a series but also acts as a standalone novel.
The character of JT Thomas is the typical Western hero protagonist. He stands by his values of right and wrong, has an unshakable dedication to doing the right thing, and when he encounters something wrong he simply cannot stay away. JT does not deviate from that paradigm. That makes the character somewhat flat and one dimensional. Theoretically, he is a good person and the readers should love him for it. However, the character is very predictable and so was the plot of the novel. It followed the typical Western plot structure very accurately and that makes the book forgettable and easy to put down.
The writing isn't bad although somewhat stiff. There is humor thrown in here and there and that seemed to be the best part of the novel for me. I got a chuckle or two out of it. Other than that I found the story predictable, boring, and unoriginal. I've heard the premise of kidnapped women and a hero dozens of times in other Western stories. I believe the characters need more depth and color to their personalities, choices, and even the way they speak. I rarely read or watch Westerns so the genre is not close to my heart.
Descriptions of the characters' appearance are also lacking. JT Thomas saves four kidnapped women but only one of them, Annabelle, is described to any extend. She plays a larger role than the other women but skipping character descriptions is a huge flaw in my book and it makes any book feel incomplete and unedited.
The novel is suitable for readers who adore the Western genre and are looking for an easy fast-paced read that doesn't require much attention. The plot is entirely action-driven, so readers who prefer well-rounded stories and characters should perhaps look elsewhere.
I give this book 2 out of 4 stars because of the issues mentioned. If the characters were less one-dimensional and the descriptions weren't skipped I would have given it a better rating.
There are mild profanities and some violence, so I believe the book is not suitable for children and sensitive audiences.
