Darwin is an orphan moving from Pittsburgh to New York to stay with his cousin, Luther, because his aunt can no longer care for him. Luther is a famous football player who believes in making Darwin earn his keep. Luther makes Darwin live in a storage room in the back of his mansion and will not give Darwin the allowance left to him by his parents until he turns 18. Until then, Darwin earns money from Luther by doing odds jobs for him like driving him around. However, this does not discourage him. Darwin is focused on his future and is determined to go to medical school to become a doctor like his father.

Darwin has a calm personality and is very loyal to the people in his life that he cares about. He works especially hard to achieve his goals even though he is constantly put in the middle of Luther’s secret gambling addiction and relationship drama. It seems like the odds are stacked against Darwin as he tries to stay true to himself and his values. Will he be able to have the life that he always envisioned for himself, or will the distractions around him cloud his judgement?

Guardian of Deceit by William H. Coles is a fast-paced fiction novel that follows Darwin’s life after he moves to New York. The best part of the book was that the author put effort into developing each character. It was easy to understand and relate to the characters because their thoughts, feelings, and flaws were known. This is especially true for the relationship Darwin has with Luther and Sweeney (Luther’s wife and Darwin’s best friend). The author included several smaller plots that contributed to the story, such as the disappearance of Bonita’s daughter. Also, some chapters were told from other characters’ points of view. I thought this was an interesting and different technique for writing a story.

I give Guardian of Deceit 3 out of 4 stars . I really enjoyed reading this book because the author did a great job of establishing the characters. It was an easy read because the chapters were short and the plot was constantly evolving, which kept my attention throughout the entire book. However, I did feel like there was some holes in the plot. For example, Darwin got married and there was no mention of him proposing or even dating the person he married. Also, I noticed a couple of spelling errors.

I recommend Guardian of Deceit to all readers over age 17 because of the language and the relationships between some characters. I think that many people will be able to relate to the characters because of how real the author made them. Also, even though one of the main characters is a professional football player, the story does not include much about football, so don’t be turned away if you don’t like sports.
