Review by Tanzim Hossain -- Just Another Day
Just Another Morning by E.Alan Fleishchauer is a collection of entertaining, mysterious and intriguing short stories. The stories are in range of various different forms of ideas, starting from mental disorders to modern issues to even destructive elements such as 9/11 or COVID-19.
One of the stories reminded me of a Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, since it contained a man working in a chocolate factory, and on his last day he kisses some of the chocolates and recites a prayer over them. What would those prayers mean or lead to, for the man or the person unwrapping the chocolates?
Sherlock and Tiger was yet another interesting story, and the longest one in the book. Davidson Rockefeller’s safe is cracked open, all the contents are missing and as it happens, his dead body is found at the back of his car. Sherlock and Tiger are the detectives who investigate the case, interact with his widow Ruth and work to solve the mysterious death of Mr.Rockefeller.
My most favorite, however, was the titular story Just Another Morning, that revolves around the World Trade Center on September 11. What makes the story incredibly beautiful are the exceptionally vivid visualization of the scenario. “And the World Trade Center shook as if it were attending to dance”- this might as well be the catch phrase for the entire book. The story, however revolves around Diane, who happens to be inside the building during the attacks and paints her despair to get out on her crutches through the stairs. Did Diane make her way out of the deadly 9/11 attacks?
Several of the stories were quite captivating and mesmerizing, and often lead me to think about the highlighted problems. For instance, Homeless…But Then depicts a homeless veteran who suffers from amnesia, and The Chalice shows Catholic priests ill-treating a group of men. It did make me thank God for how lucky I was to be totally normal and in good shape.
A few of them shows modern problems that circulate us every day. Not to mention the story that plants COVID-19 into it, which did make reading quite relatable at this moment.
To sum it up, although the stories were interesting to read and the wordings were great, occasionally I felt the stories weren’t leading to anything specific and sometimes it was hard to understand what the point of the story was. A number of stories had religious elements in them, purgatory is mentioned in the last parts of the book, and there were several statements that would not be appreciated by someone who is sensitive towards religious beliefs.
As far as editing, there were only a few minor errors, three to four at max.
There is a moderate level of profanity and irregular goriness, so it’s better to be made accessible to ones above or in high school.
With everything considered, I give Just Another Morning 3 out of 4 stars. I would have given it a 4 if the plots were better designed but a few of them did have noticeably interesting writings, which made me credit it above a two star. Not very highly recommended, but ones who thoroughly enjoy reading short stories may try this out.
