[Following is a volunteer review of "Rescued" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
Rescued by E. Alan Fleischauer, is a thriller and first of the JT Thomas series. John Thurgood Thomas (JT) is a typical 'Old West' hero. He is tall, courageous, honest, an excellent shot, and a loner who plays by his own rules.
The story starts with JT minding his own business at a recently discovered secret cave when he spies a wagon and 2 horsemen on the road. On closer examination, he sees that few women are walking behind, tied to the wagon. When one of them falls, the men drag her through the mud, beat her, and laugh.
Without a moment's hesitation, JT shoots some of the men and rescues the women. The horsemen escape. However, all is not as it seems and one of them should not have been rescued at all. He realizes he underestimated the women and things are unraveling at a pace that he can no longer control. There starts a journey of mysteries, crime, shoot-outs, treasures, friendship, loyalty, love, and loss. I have to admit that this was my first western novel. I can see now why they are so popular. I will surely be digging into the second book of the JT Thomas series soon.
About this book- I liked everything. The storyline is clear and crisp. The characters are developed very well. Such character development allows the suspense of the plot to emerge just at the right time. Some of the characters are black and white; you know they are good guys or bad. Others are layered in a way that would make you watch them through the book, waiting for the other shoe to drop. All pieces fit perfectly into the story. The horses, the quintessential sheriff, bank, saloons, bartenders, dusty roads, boarding houses, boarding house owners, and guns- all of them have a part to play in the story. I was particularly fond of the horses Pete and Re-Pete.
I did not dislike anything in the book, except that it ended. There are certain things in the plot that have been left unaddressed- like the sudden disappearance of one of the main characters. It may get addressed in the next book, but I wouldn't know yet.
Rescued gives a peek into the time when Western Frontier expansion was about to end, after the first world war and also a little bit of urban life of New York City. People interested in historical dramas may like the book. Western fans will surely love the book. The book does not have any explicit erotic scenes. However, it does have expletives, violence, guns, and crime. Therefore, it is not suitable for children.
I did not find any typos in the book or distracting grammatical mistakes. The book seems to be edited professionally.
I found the book to be a great read. I would love to recommend this book to others like me, who may have been hesitant to pick up a Western before. For this reason, I rate the book four out of four stars.
