Hiking into the woods is not everyone’s cup of tea. This is especially true for thirteen-year-old Sarah, who is about to trek deep into the wilderness of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. In Charlie Sheldon’s novel Strong Heart, Sarah is forced to take a trip with her estranged grandfather and his Native American friends, a trip he had planned months before her unsuspected arrival. This book is a coming of age story in many ways.

My first instinct when beginning this book was that it was going to be like any other coming of age adventure story, however, I am pleased to say that this was not at all the case. We learn immediately of the relationship between the abandoned teen and her grandfather, the trip they plan to take, and the reason for taking it. The stage is set for an intense story of adventure, and from the start I am all in.

This book has many twists and unexpected turns that are well developed and give a deeper meaning to the overall theme. I enjoyed how descriptive the writer was with his portrayal of nature, he took the time to transmit the real beauty of the park to the readers while telling an imaginary tale. This book has different levels that explore the world through multiple views, and it brings readers into a different time and perspective. It is a thrilling read for anyone interested in the magic of legends

What I enjoy most about this book is the suspense. The action within this book is bold and the events are vividly described and carry so much emotion that, as a reader, you can really slip into another world. Something that I personally did not like was the “unexplainable” parts of the book, they were a little too far-fetched for me. I believe that it is something that a spiritual person or someone who enjoys a good mystery will appreciate. With that said, I really loved the writing in all parts of this novel and found it to be a story that was extremely easy to become absorbed in.

Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book delivers an extortionary tale about a rebellious teenage girl, and her ability to overcome her circumstances. It is a great novel for young adults and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Native American culture, mystery, or adventure.
