Awakening, by Jackie Goldman is about a divorced woman coming to terms with raising her kids on her own. As a single woman and mom she is learning to deal with life on her own, as well as on her own terms. When she needs to figure something out or deal with her feelings towards her ex-husband she reaches for her sketchbook. She works through her issues on paper, drawing her alter ego dealing with life the way she wishes she could.

The main character of Goldman's book is an elementary school teacher and single mom. As a teacher she must deal with students, parents, and fellow teachers. As a single woman she must deal with being alone and the loneliness that comes with it. She must deal with the shock of going from being a wife, part of a couple, to being a single woman. As a mom she must deal with her kids, her ex-husband, and her own mom. All in all, she has a very full plate, and drawing is a quick and easy release, escape, from all she must deal with.

This book was well written. There were few grammatical issues and no spelling errors. It was obvious to me that this book was proofread and extremely well edited before submission, providing very easy and enjoyable reading.

I like how Goldman wrote this book. I like how the characters were developed, how they evolved, and how they interacted with each other. When times got tough, as they so often do, the strong female characters in this book came together to face whatever life had to throw at them.

I tried to find something I did not like about Awakening, if only for the sake of constructive criticism, but I could not. While it has adult content, the kind that often offends me, that did not happen here. Fowl language used was an appropriate response to the situation at hand. Sexual content was a matter of nature taking it's course between two consenting adults.

I recommend this book for mature audiences as it contains fowl language, violent graphics, mild sexual content, and drug use. While fowl language seems mild to me others may find it offensive. The graphics were a bit bloody and violent for my taste but were mild compared to others I have seen. The sex scenes were more implied than explicit and I appreciated that. There was some drug use, if marijuana can be qualified as a drug.

Because of adult content and the few grammatical errors found I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars.
