Review by Tarbena45 -- Was I To Blame? by B.W.Knight
[Following is a volunteer review of "Was I To Blame?" by B.W.Knight.]
Thank Goodness I have just finished reading Was I to Blame by B.W. Knight.
This story is set in London and revolves around the lives of a group of women who meet up regularly to discuss what is going on in their lives.
The main character is Angie who is portrayed as a downtrodden mother who lives with her alcoholic husband, George, and two young children. Their lives are caught up in a downward spiral of conflict. The reader has to endure page after page of dialogue between Angie and George as they proceed to tear each other apart. It charts her day to day life with a man who, for his part, doesn’t feel as though he is receiving enough love and attention. She, for her part, cannot cope with the drunken outbursts and his lack of interest in the job of raising their children. Both want to escape from the life they have created. She believes she still loves him and wants to turn back the clock to the joyful times they used to have.
Does their relationship unravel completely? Do we care?
I found all the characters loathsome. Secrets and lies, fake stories, and rumors seem to drive the women’s lives. Molly, Helen, and Janet make up the rest of the group of friends who all have simmering dramatic situations to cope with. They offer each other advice and comfort when faced with often tragic circumstances.
The storyline lurches from one disastrous scenario to another. Many aspects of modern-day social problems are thrown into the pot by each of the characters. The author covers marital problems involving unfaithfulness, as well as bullying, suicide, abusive relationships, and coping with the death of a child, to name a few. The discussions of these issues between the friends are shallow and beyond irritating. It has relentlessly depressing storylines. All the way through I was hoping for a glimmer of positivity or humor but there is nothing to break the tedium.
Was I To Blame may appeal to fans of badly written soap operas. You must not expect it to be a joyful read or even one that makes you stop and think about the grave issues that B.W. Knight explores.
I would not recommend this book and I rate it 1 out of 4 stars. .
From the start, there are numerous grammatical errors. It has been badly edited and this added to my annoyance whilst plodding through this book.
There are no explicit scenes of an erotic nature. The conversations between characters are often abusive and there are profanities peppered throughout.
