The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a heartwarming story of a group of women who bond through the artful sport of fly fishing. It features the intertwining stories of five women from different walks of life. Rose, the elder fisherwoman whose wisdom extends far beyond fishing. Sophie, the plant nursery owner whose passion inspires those around her. Veronica, the confident life coach with a talent for tough love. Amanda, the warmhearted teacher and mother with struggles she hides with a smile. Lastly Melody, the newest and youngest of the group with a spunky disposition and an introduction that brings a whole new meaning to “crazy fishing story.” You experience the exciting highs and the heartbreaking lows alongside these characters, and truly feel like you’re a part of their little sisterhood. There are also plenty of fly fishing tips and tricks throughout the book, and after reading, you’ll want to grab the important women in your life and hit the water!

The best part of this book is the relationship between the contrasting characters. You as the reader get to enjoy both the banter between characters, and peeks into each of the women’s lives. Seeing their different personalities play off of each other makes you feel like you’re a part of their tight knit group. These women also undergo significant character growth throughout the book, which inspires an introspective reader to do the same for themselves.

The only disappointment I had in reading this book would be that I was not privy to the fly fishing terminology that is used throughout. While a knowledge of the sport is not necessary to enjoy the story, I believe an understanding of this type of fishing would have enriched the experience. Another possible negative is the presence of crude language, but it is limited and does not take away from the narrative.

My rating for this book is 4/4. The writing is full of beautiful and compelling imagery of nature and those present in it. This book was extremely hard to put down because you become invested in the lives of the characters. The alternating narrative is easy to keep up with and it is amusing to observe each woman’s differing thoughts and opinions. The editing is excellent, I couldn’t find any major grammatical or spelling errors.

I would recommend this book to women of any age, or to anyone passionate about fly fishing. It features a type of friendship that most women go their whole lives searching for, and it includes a plethora of fishing tips for the aficionado.
