The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings
A Book Review by Kanyua Nduthu

A friendship buds between five women who are fly-fishers. Sophie, Rose, Amanda, Veronica and Melody finds time to go fly-fishing in Arkansas River during their free time. Sophie meets Rose in a fly-shop and strike a friendship instantly, strange isn’t it? Sophie grew up in Kansas state, where the family had a fish pond which the father would stock every year to ensure they were not out fishing options to avoid boredom. So fishing was not new to her; it was an art she had mastered as a kid. She likes doing things like a little kid despite her being in her forties: a saying goes; life starts at forty.

Sophie reminds me of my own break up with my fiance. After courting for several years and got engaged, and stood to wait for him to wind his military service to give them time to marry, John finds another girl whom he marries in less than a year. You do not recover from such break ups. You only manage somehow to move on but you never have the reason to trust any man with your heart again. That is how Sophie found herself single at forty. That’s the part I like.

Each of the five women has their unique characters. Veronica is a Women Coach. She met Sophie in one of her flights to work and bum! They struck a friendship just like that. She was at first nervous about fly-fishing and getting dirty but after a few years of practice she outgrew her anxiety and can fish confidently. Amanda is married to a military man, Mike. They have two boys, Parker and Jordan. She had visited Sophie’s pumpkin garden along with her family when they first met. With her husband deployed in military service in Afghanistan, Amanda is single parenting and finds it hard to get free time for social life. But since her mother-in-law lives nearby, she watches over the children as Amanda goes to fly-fish with her best friends. I can describe all the characters of Rose and Melody but for the sake of this review, I suggest you read the book to get a clear image of how friendship and recreation can transform people and find family where there is none.

The most interesting bit is how Cummings has managed to tell a story of five women in one story. I find it fascinating how each woman takes turn to tell her story without losing track of the plot and relevance of the book. It is clear that the five women are not just fly-fishers but life buddies who are out to support and help each other to grow in other spheres of their lives. Part of that is how Amanda passes on and this preludes the suffering that Rose has held for many years after losing her then nine-year-old daughter, Clara.

While loss and suffering are part of life, the joy and happiness with a life well lived cannot be overlooked in Reel Sisters. The use of # to represent number however is a pointer that the book was not professionally edited. As such I rate this book 3 out 4 and recommend it to anyone interested in understanding how friendship and recreation can turn to be useful in social development. Quite engaging.
