Review by habsfan212 -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
The book Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is about friendship, family, and history. You get to witness strangers learning to know each other to care for one another. It’s a beautiful story about getting to know yourself and learning more about the important story of the Native Americans.
This novel follows the camping trip of Tom Olsen, his friends, and Tom’s granddaughter Sarah who arrived without notice just before they left for the trip. They decide to bring her along hoping for the best. After a difficult beginning of the trip, Sarah goes missing. She reappears eight days later with an incredible story about the past of Native Americans. The story then goes into another direction in a different timeline with different characters. It’s certainly interesting, but mainly confusing for the readers.
The story is separated into two different narrative arcs and in my opinion, the part set in the present is the most interesting. Witnessing Sarah bonding with the other characters is heartwarming and you get to care for them as a group. I appreciated how realist the evolution of these relationships are. Sarah never really had anyone to care for her and she is difficult to approach because of that. Therefore, it’s not love at first sight with her grandfather Tom and it’s great to see them slowly get to know each other.
The part of the story set in the past starts when Sarah goes missing and is about a group of Native Americans traveling on ground and water to reach back their home with their new wives. This story was confusing to me. The character named Strong Heart seems to be Sarah. Did she travel through time? Is she only dreaming? This is still not clear to me. The characters in this timeline have names difficult to remember and I was constantly wondering who is who while reading through the pages. There’s a lot of action, it’s great to learn a bit of history and the scenery certainly feels spectacular. However, being constantly confused and not able to care about these characters, I was always hoping to go back to the story about Sarah’s friends.
I had a good time reading this book, but I didn’t like that there were two different stories. If this doesn’t bother you then this story is for you. However, this novel is worth a read anyway. It’s great to learn about the history of Native Americans and caring about the character’s friendship forces to turn the pages because you need to know what happens to them. That’s always a good sign to know if a book is worth it. It’s perfectly edited and it’s worth 3 out of 4 stars in my opinion. I liked it enough to want to read the sequels, but the confusion I experienced prevents me from giving it the perfect note.
