Review by cats_cats -- The Reel Sisters
The Reel Sisters, written by Michelle Cummings, is an inspiring novel telling the story of five women who share a common interest: fly fishing. Rose lives in a cabin near the river and invites three of her best friends to spend a weekend there in order to practice fly fishing, the sport they all love. While they are at the river, the strangest thing happens: a naked woman falls down the stream and gets fished out by this group of ladies. This was only the start of a trip full of learning about what true friendship means, and how the people on our surroundings play such an important role to help us go through a path of self-discovery.
I adore how this book made me feel. It made me reflect upon the moments I have lived and it showed me how something as simple as life can be so complex, yet so beautiful. This book connects the stories of five ladies with absolutely contrasting lives, and shows how strangers can grow fond of each other, despite of their differences. The friendship these five women create surpasses all the social, cultural and economic barriers that differentiate them, while generating a bond hard to break and realizing that reality is always better if you share it with friends and people you love.
I cannot begin to describe the pureness of this book. It shows a realistic view of life and the characters are so human, they could easily be your neighbors, friends, families, or even yourself. It shows how everyone has a different life that encompasses individual struggles, but how we, as humans, still manage to get over the differences to create strong connections with each other.
What I adore about this book, is that it portrays how friendship grows over time and how it can emerge at the most unexpected moments, especially when you are less looking for it. Although I really liked the message this book is transmitting, I didn’t completely like the way it is written. What I disliked most about this novel, was that at times it became repetitive and I found the narrative to be a little bit monotonous, which is why I rate it 3 out of 4 stars. Also, the book is professionally edited, however it is not exempt of a couple typos.
This is a reading I definitely enjoyed and it is a book I would love to discuss with other people, especially since it has a section that includes a set of questions to reflect upon at the end. I would definitely recommend this novel to every reader who is a fan of women’s contemporary fiction. However, I would not recommend it if you are looking for more on an action type of novel.
