Review by LadyOfStoriess -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an ineresting book, containing wild nature, rainy weather and rebellious hearts. I gave it 3 out of 4 stars because it wasn't without issues. I enjoyed the plot, but I couldn't get used to the writing style of an author. It wasn't bad, but I would like to have more complex sentences with much more descriptions.
What does Strong Heart is about? Well, on the first pages we meet our main characters: William, his daughter Myra and his friend Tom. They are packing for a trip, when Tom's ex wife comes and literally drops him a girl, claiming to be his granddaughter.
The girl, Sarah, is supposed to stay at her grandfather's because her dad is working in Europe. Tom and William decide to take her on a trip with them, spend some time together and maybe know her a little better. Which sounds like a good plan, doesn't it?
First of all, I have to say, the book is exellently edited. It's a pure pleasure to read it, with those beautifull little pictures at the beginning of each chapter. There are no typos or errors, so the reader can enjoy the story without any distractions. I also liked the idea of quotes at the beginning of the book. You can see that the book has been well refined and published.
The story is really warm, despite of being set in a cold woods of the Olympic National Park in the Washington state.
I liked all of the main characters, which is quite weird, because there is always this one character in book you don't really like. Here, I genuinely liked everyone. I loved interactions between all of them, I could feel this special connection between characters. I knew I was reading about people who are family by choice, but I felt how they love and care for each other. The warm was beaming from this book and I enjoyed it the most. I liked the honest talks and heart warming gestures.
I liked all of the main characters, but William was my favourite. This old, fat, Indian man had someting special in himself. I loved the way he understood Sarah and her issues. He was so patient with her! I felt connected to him in a really strange way. To me, he was the spirit of that book, no matter, that his role in this story wasn’t the major.
At the beginning, I could't get along with Sarah. She was so annoying and ungreatful! I knew she’s just a child, traumatized in some ways, and I should be more patient with her. After some part of the book, and after some talks and events, I started liking her. At the end, I have already loved her. She was all rebellious and brave, I just couldn’t be irritate with her anymore. I loved the way she became the part of the family.
Strong Heart got 3 out of 4 stars from me, because I had some issues. I liked the plot, but I didn't like the way it was written. To me, there were not enought descriptions of places. I knew how people looked like, but I didn’t know the place they lived in. I couldn't really feel the atmosphere of cold, rainy woods. The climat is important in that book, so I think I should be able to feel it. Well, I couldn't. Also, sometimes characters reactions and feelings were shallow. I mean, I had a feeling, that in real life, people are feeling more and their reactions are more rapid. In book, they all were rather calm and they didn’t react reasonable and reliable to some events.
The book is mostly about family and relations between it's members, so you won't find here any romantic relationship or steamy scenes. There are no curse words, and I think the book can be read by younger teenagers.
Do I recommend Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon? Well, yes. If you like wild forests, Indian folklore, and emerging family relationships, that book is for you!
