Strong Heart begins with a hiking trip in the Olympic National Park. Old friends Tom and William, along with Tom’s adult daughter Myra, plan to go on a long camping trip through the mountains to honor Tom’s deceased grandfather, Bob-Bob. Days before the trip, unexpected guests come to Tom’s doorstep. Sarah, the granddaughter Tom never knew he had, was left with him by his disgruntled ex-wife. Sullen and hostile, Sarah is uninterested in getting to know her new family, but William suggests that Tom take Sarah along on the hiking trip.

Up in the mountains Sarah begins to get to know her new family, though she is careful to keep them at a distance. Tom reveals an artifact that his grandfather gave him just before he died. Trouble lurks just around the corner and the group needs the help of old and new friends in this tale of legend, science, and discovery.

I rated Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon 3 out of 4 stars. The book was passionately written and an enjoyable read. The only major negative was a repeated difficulty in knowing who was speaking due to the way it was edited. This was the only reason I took away a star.

This book is a wealth of information on the various theories of early man’s movements across the globe. Sheldon uses scientifically gathered data that is beautifully coupled with legends and folklore that have been passed down from generation to generation to paint a picture of those movements. The book is passionately written and sparks an interest in subjects that many readers may care nothing about. The action of the book is well-coupled with the archeology aspects and the narrative is maintained and continued throughout the book. Sheldon’s knowledge of the several different aspects of archeology and native folklore are evident. Sheldon also creates characters that are unique and grounded in their own culture and personal history. The interactions between the characters are natural and offer humor and character building as well as drive the narrative forward.

The only aspect of this book that I did not like was the editing, as I mentioned earlier. I often ran across conversations that I had to reread because I couldn’t follow who was speaking. It occurred often enough to distract from the story. However, this was the only part of the book that I disliked, and as a whole the book was an excellent read.

I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys mystery, suspense, and fiction rooted in history. There are instances of strong language.
