Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is the story of Sarah Cooley, a troubled teenager in search of a loving family. She has just been dropped off by her Grandmother Ruth, who does not want her, at the house of her Grandfather Tom, who does not know that she exists. She interrupts his plans to go hiking and camping in the Olympic Mountains. He and his two friends, William and Myra, are going to visit the grave site of Tom's father, whom he buried there forty nine years ago. William convinces Tom to bring Sarah on the journey.

While on the hiking trip, Sarah is lost. Tom and his friends are frantic. They search everywhere and call in help. She is nowhere to be found. She shows up eight days later in the middle of a thunderstorm, wet, cold, hungry, and dehydrated. She relates a fantastic tale of being transported back in time to live with her Native American ancestors.

I liked how the author brought a lot of knowledge and personal experience to the book. His love for the land shows in how he describes it. It is beautiful and you can almost see it through his eyes. He talks of Native Americans and their customs and traditions. He describes their artifacts and how they used them. He shows that everything they had was made with their own hands and just to survive was an everyday struggle.

I did not like how the book ended. I thought that it left too many questions unanswered. I think that it would have added a lot to the story, if he had included the final details. I just felt like it needed that closure. For this reason, I rated the book a 3 out of 4 stars.

On the whole, I think it was a good story. It taught all of them, that life does not just revolve around you. Every decision that you make affects someone else in life. It brought all of them closer together and made them appreciate each other's strengths and weaknesses. It taught them to be thankful for the simple things and that you are never too old to learn something new. I think it would be a good book for anyone, especially someone that enjoyed history and nature. It does have some profanity, most of it is mild. It does give some gruesome details, while Sarah is lost. I thought the book was professionally edited.
