Veil of Secrecy by Margaret Franceschini is an interesting book. I feel that my interpretation goes beyond the authors intent. This book depicts the story of Julie, a strong young woman who loves her family and has a strong dedication to her education. She works at a bakery part time after school (High School) to save money to peruse a career in journalism. At that bakery, she falls in love and begins a secret affair with the head beaker who is older that her. Eventually she becomes pregnant and is faced with the reality that her lover isn’t interested in having a family, or “making things right”. She is forced to leave her home and go off to a nunnery, and give up her child for adoption.
Later we meet a young woman, Marina, who lives in Manhattan. She grew up in a loving home with well-off parents how strongly encourage her to go out and enjoy her teen years, as she will soon have to go to college. After weeks of being told to go out, she finally obliges and goes to the local museum with her cousin. During this trip she loses her cousin, and meets a man who she becomes instantly attracted to. He gives her his number, as she becomes reunited with her cousin.
They begin a secretive relationship. First, its only walking around the museum, then dinner, and eventually they meet his apartment. Like Julie, Marina, believes in her relationship, and believes that she will marry this man upon her 18th birthday. Unfortunately, she becomes pregnant before then, and the story repeats its self. Her lover encourages her to abort the child, she chooses to keep it, and her family strongly encourages her to put it up for adoption.
The ending of the book takes an unexpected turn of events and we are left heart broken, and wishing that the situations that occurred turned out differently.
I believe that the authors intent with this story was to depict the struggle and deceit women face throughout their lives; they are used until they lose their value, and then abandoned to deal with the consequences of their actions. I feel the author did a great job at portraying this, but I feel this book could’ve been more. This book could’ve argued Nature vs. Nurture. Julie and Marina lived in different parts of the world and lived in different times, yet they both ended in the same situation. They had similar upbringings (Loving and encouraging parents) with different financial means, yet they both had to give their children up for adoption. I felt the book was lacking in imagination/creativity. I understand that the author wanted to really drive home the similarity between Julie, and Marina, but unfortunately it comes off as cookie-cutter/lazy writing. Even the lovers seem to be the exact person, in different times and with different jobs.
Overall, this book left me wanting more and frankly left me feeling disappointed. This book had the potential to be great yet it was only okay. Id rate this book a 2 out of 4.
No nudity. No foul language. No grammatical errors.
