What is more important in life? Being happy or convincing everyone around you that you are successful? The book Man Mission by Eytan Uliel continuously brings up that topic. It’s an opportunity to see what can happen if you don’t do what it takes to get out of an unfulfilling life. Making sacrifices for the ones you love is often necessary, but it must never be done at the cost of losing yourself. This being said, that story is about so much more than that.

This novel follows the yearly travels of four friends or Man Mission as they called it. They go on several adventures in exotic destinations. Their objective is to take a break from their family life and to rediscover what it is to be a man. The story goes back and forth in the timeline, showing us what happened in the year before each travel, which helps us understand the present state of mind of every character. We witness their joy, their sadness and their life evolving as we advance through the pages.

This story is realistic and can be hard to read at times. You can see love fading after several years, someone suffering depression after working too much in an unfulfilling job and even someone going nowhere in his life and yet failing when he does something and creates his own company. There’s a lot of suffering in this book and there’s a good chance you might have experienced one of these situations. In my opinion, that’s a good thing. It makes it all relatable.

If you are not too much interested in the emotional tale, you can find what you are looking for with the travels the characters are experiencing. You can read about destinations you have dreamed about like Hawaii, New Zealand, Fiji or Peru. The description is accurate and will maybe influence your next vacations. These Man Mission are enjoyable adventures, not just a stay in an all-inclusive resort.

There are some negative in this book. The relationship between the protagonist and his wife can be frustrating. In the protagonist’s point of view, his wife is selfish, doesn’t want to work, doesn’t love him and values more money than her husband’s happiness. It would have been interesting to see her point of view to understand her motives. It’s not always black or white and maybe there’s more to her behavior, but we’ll never know. Despite this, this book is worth a read, it’s perfectly edited and it deserves 4 out of 4 stars.
