Book: Veil of Secrecy
Author: Margaret Franceschini

Veil of Secrecy is a fictional novel. The story starts off in Canada with the life of a young girl, Julie, who starts to go through the experiences of love and maturity. She becomes romantically involved with a man she works with and ends up pregnant due to their relationship. Her parents decide that she must be sent to a place called "The Fold' where she will be able to continue her studies and have her child there which will be adopted after birth. The story continues with her life at the Fold which is abruptly stopped due to her giving birth. Her baby is reluctantly taken away and Julie continues on with her life. The rest of the book picks up with the child, Marina, who just turns 16 and her start to adulthood. As you continue reading you will find out whether Marina will follow the same story as her biological mother did, or if she opens a different chapter in her life.

My personal opinion of the book was that it did not click for me. There were no instances where I felt interested or motivated enough to continue reading. There were multiple times where I thought paragraphs were dragged out unnecessarily which made me lose my attention. There were very few eye-catching moments and I also found the ending to come to an unsatisfying end. I found that characters such as Julie and Marina which were meant to be liked and favored had me instead disliking them. Although some characters were charming such as Seton/Cordelia, I never really sympathized with Marina through the book especially during parts where empathy was supposed to be expressed.

Although the book never really made me jump out of my seat with interest, I did enjoy the idea of the plot. I found that the book was very unique and I have never heard anything quite similar to this storyline. I did like the fact that the author made connections with the sea and Marina. I also thought that scenes were described very well which helped with visualization and put lots of life into the words. I found that the character's emotions were expressed greatly which gave lots of personality to each of them. In regards to technicalities, I found no issues with grammar or spelling.

I believe that this book should be mostly read by an older age group due to there being some borderline erotic descriptions. I also believe that an older age group would enjoy and understand this book much better compared to a younger audience which has a definite lower attention span and wouldn't be able to comprehend vocabulary used throughout the book.

Overall, I rate this book a 3 out of 4. The book was not perfect but it was not the worse. Although I wouldn't recommend this to my friends, unfortunately.
