Review by gschauer -- The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings
The Reel Sisters written by Michelle Cummings is heartwarming story about friendship between women of different ages, life styles, and personalities who bond over fly fishing.
Rose, an older widowed woman and most experienced in fly fishing, is a motherly figure that never swears. When others might say “Jesus Christ”, Rose says “Cheese and Rice”. Rose watches over the others and gives them advise. Veronica and Sophie, somewhere in their 40’s, are both career women. Veronica, a city girl married to a restaurant owner, is CEO of her own company, coaching other women to be better leaders. Sophie is single and a former farm girl that owns her own greenhouse. Amanda is a 23-year-old 5th grade teacher who is married with two children and is great at budget shopping.
This eclectic group of women come together often to fly fish, having lots of fun and laughs in the process. They often correlate their lives to fly fishing in some way. In life, as in fishing, there are days we get skunked and other days we have a great day, catching more than we expect. It becomes very interesting when Veronica pulls in a catch that is almost unheard of – a naked woman. Soon the four women become five and share their life adventures with each other.
Each section of the story changes perspectives, each told by one of the women’s viewpoint. At first this was a little confusing. However, the author does a great job changing the perspective from one section to another in a way that flows very well. Once I read a little about each character, it became easy to follow the narrative. I found it most difficult when I was interrupted in the middle of a section and had to put the book down for a while. Then, when I returned to reading, I had to go back in the book to see which character was telling the story in the section I was reading.
This is a story for all audiences. There is some swearing, but it is minor and fits into the story. Since fishing is not something I like, I was surprised that I really enjoyed the story. The five characters and their friendship were wonderfully developed. With the different personalities and experiences, I found that I could relate to all of them in some way or other. Sometimes I felt my own thoughts and experiences aligned to theirs, other times I knew someone in my life that seemed a lot like them.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars as it was a story of how great friends support each other. Except for a few minor errors, the book was exceptionally flawless. I would recommend this book to everyone.
