Every so often, Rose, Sophie, Veronica and Amanda, meet in the wild of Colorado in a cabin owned by Rose near the Arkansas River. They share food, wine, stories and their love for fly fishing. One such meeting and they don't just catch fish. They rescue a naked young woman flaring downstream, Melody. They take care of her and from that moment all these women share a bond that goes beyond their love for the same sport, fly fishing.

So often, popular media portrays woman as unable to get along because of too much drama, I was extremely excited to read about women from vastly different backgrounds and ages get along so well. Rose being the oldest and more like a mother to them all. Veronica is married and is a successful CEO who helps women leaders develop better leadership skills. Amanda is a military wife, a mother of 2 and a teacher. Sophie is a greenhouse farmer who wishes to find a man to share her life with. Melody is the youngest, a photographer and has never been able to fit in social groups. The lives and relationships of these women felt tangible and I was fully invested as a reader. It felt so real I was on a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the book.

The book begins with a lot of information on fly fishing. If you are not familiar with the sport I'd suggest you dig a little on it before you begin reading. Otherwise you might not enjoy reading the book. The author creates a vivid image and it gave me a clear picture of what was happening in the river. She describes how their daily emotions affect their performance in the rivers. It is immensely exciting how reading a book can help you live a lifetime of experiences through the lives of the characters. Indeed, whoever says they have one life to live must not know how to read a book.

I'm an outdoor enthusiast and Michelle Cummings accurately portrays the settings in the novel. The slow waters, hikes to out of the way, isolated spots, beautiful rocks by the river and much more. It is easy to picture the views, smells and even sounds associated with nature.i especially loved Sophie's reference to nature as her special church. A sanctuary where you're judged by your own abilities and desires. It was also great to learn how much fly fishing correlates to the circle of life.

The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings qualifies a perfect rating, 4 out of 4 stars. It's a good book for outdoor enthusiasts, people who love fly fishing and the beauty of friendship bonds. It's however not a good book for children since there's a little bit of profane language when Melody first joins the group.
