Review by xxqueenforadayxx -- The Spirit of Want
The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is mainly about two characters, Luke, and Lucy. Luke is an eye surgeon that works with Lucy's well-respected father. When allegations arise that her father got a fellow fired to cover up his own mistake, Luke is faced with the decision of what's morally right or to help cover up the scandal. Lucy is one of the best defense lawyers until she is caught sleeping with her high profiled client. After being disbarred and loosing his case they run to hide away in Africa. Where she is faced with some harsh truths about the man she left her family and destroyed her career over. Coming back to the states, Lucy tries to rebuild her life and to reconnect with the family she heartlessly abandoned.
This being my third book by Coles I know to expect the unexpected by now. This one jumps straight into Luke's, Lucy's, and her family's drama in the very first chapter. I rated this book 2 out of 4 stars. As always it seems to be professionally edited, but I found the whole book to be emotionally distant. I wish the characters were more relatable. There doesn't seem to be any real emotion or connections between any of the characters. I thought it was hard to relate to characters who feel more like robots than humans.
The parts I liked the most about this book is that it leaves some mystery for you to shape your own opinions. Like Lucy's client Hower Bain for example. The book implies he is a bad man but you never really find out for a fact all that he was truly guilty of. I also like that it jumps from one character to another rather than focusing on one character's perspective.
What I disliked the most was how distant it all was. Everything seemed really bland. I equally disliked the beginning. I never found the answer as to why Lucy married Luke. Did they simply grow closer because of the crash? Because it seemed to me she simply married him to sway his witness statement. Nothing was really explained with great detail. It made the book kind of boring to read I thought. Also, I would have liked if it focused more on Luke rather than Lucy. As a mother myself, I found Lucy being extremely unlikable and foolish for a woman who was supposed to be so smart.
I would recommend this book to young adults and up. There is some sexual content though it doesn't go into great detail. There is some cursing but I found it being hardly noticeable. This book would be great for anyone that would like to read about a woman destroying her life. Also, for those who like a fast paced short read
