Review by chigz -- The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings
Michelle Cummings's novel The Reel Sisters shows that friendship starts in different places and under different circumstances. What units each individual to the other is usually common interests and personalities. Rose, Sophie, Melody, Veronica, and Amanda are the epitome of friendship built on common hobbies and interests, in this case, fly-fishing and love for the great outdoors.
Despite their ethnic and socioeconomic differences, these five women found a common hobby that brought them together. They each set aside their usual day to day lives, once each year, to meet at Rose's cabin in the woods to enjoy themselves and, most of all, to fly-fish and admire mother nature. Cummings manages to express her undying love for fly-fishing. At the beginning of each chapter, we are given an extract from other fishing books advising us on fly-fishing and how to deal with mother nature. I see Cummings as being represented by Rose, a character in the novel. Rose is an accomplished fly-fisher who tries, by any means necessary, to introduce anyone she can to fly-fishing. My overall view of the novel is it is an introduction to fly-fishing interwoven with drama, romance, and tragedy.
The author keeps the story interesting as she introduces drama, romance, and tragedy to the story. She, however, dose not falter from her main theme, which is fly-fishing. Every chapter has a heading which is the name of the character whose voice and thoughts are expressed in that particular chapter. The unique style makes us feel close to each character. We hear their inner thoughts and feel their most hidden feelings. That makes us connect with each character on a personal level.
The Reel Sisters is a book that shows Cummings's knowledge, love, and devotion to the art of fly-fishing and for nature and the great outdoors as a whole. We are taken through the journey of mutual understanding and friendship between the characters. One comes to appreciate fishing as a hobby. For those of us who wish partake in this cleansing hobby, everything is spelled out to us with great care. This novel serves as a beginner's guide to fly-fishing as it has everything from advice on fishing and an address book for fishing organizations from all around the world , especially for women. She encourages women to try out this art, that was once deemed to be suitable only for men.
I rate this novel 4 out of 4 , this is because I see it serving its intended purpose. This book is a "one-stop-shop" for everyone who wants to try fly-fishing. I think that was Cummings's main reason for writing this novel. One gets everything from encouragement to advice on fly-fishing, on friendship, and on life as a whole. Its very easy to recommend this novel. The tittle and cover picture speaks for themselves. This book was meant for wannabe fly-fishers and anglers. There is swearing, hence I would not recommend it to anyone who does not go well with such vocabulary. There are no sex scenes in book and there are no grammatical and typo errors. However it deals with religion of Christianity orientation, thus making it unsuitable for those who are offended with such religion.
